article imageMarch Will "Roar In Like A Lion" In Southern Ontario

By Carolyn E. Price     Mar 1, 2007 in Environment
Massive winter storm is predicted to dump snow, freezing rain and ice pellets and finally turning to just rain overnight. Welcome to March 2007, when just four weeks ago, those dasterdly groundhogs said Spring was just around the corner!
A massive winter weather system is bearing down on Southern Ontario and the Greater Toronto Area today and it's predicted to arrive in Toronto around noon today.
A freezing rain warning is in effect for Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton and Toronto. Plus, there is a winter storm watch for Vaughan across to Richmond Hill, North to Barrie and east through Pickering and Oshawa to Kingston.
In Toronto, the storm will hit around noon today bringing first light snow and ice pellets with an estimated accumulation of up to 10 centimetres (4 inches). The snow will change over to freezing rain and sleet later around 5 this afternoon.
680News is also warning that power outages should be expected as ice builds on on the tree branches and winds expected up to 70 kilometres per hour.
OPP are suggesting that if you can, people should leave work early and drive very carefully this afternoon, leaving four times as much space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Toronto road crews are spraying the roads with brine.
In a related story, all southbound routes into Toronto are being described as "wide open" as a lot of people appear to be staying home.
