article imageBelgian Firefighters Clash With Police

By Carolyn E. Price     Mar 1, 2007 in World
Firefighters v. cops. Two professions that usually work side by side.
Three hundred Belgian riot police tried to keep over 2,000 Belgian firefighters from storming through a security perimiter around the parliament buildings in Brussels yesterday.
Six people were injured in the clash with police as the two sides traded barrages from water cannons during the chaotic demonstration in the capital city yesterday. Both sides were using their protective helmets and were spraying each other with huge jets of water.
Three policemen sustained facial injuries when firefighters began pelting them with equipment and loose objects, police said in a statement. Three firefighters had to be hospitalized, one after he fell off a water cannon and broke two ribs.
The firefighters were demonstrating outside the parliament buildings demanding better working conditions, better compensation if they are hurt on the job and earlier retirement ages.
