The release of the balcony rapist Paul Callow has not sat well with the places he is trying to set up home in. After being pushed out of one community he is trying to settle in again and police are warning the public.
After being released last week the man more commonly known as the balcony rapist tried to make the city of Surrey, British Columbia his new home. The people that lived there were not happy with this decision and rallied together to have something done. Their efforts worked and he has now moved to New Westminster, and the residents there are trying to have him leave their town.
Ontario's attorney general has banned him from moving back into their province, and it is becoming clear that there is a clear case of NIMBY (not in my back yard) is going on here.
The question is, what do we do with high risk offenders. This case seems unique in that the police are keeping the public in tune with what is going on. He has restrictions - which mean nothing to me, I don't know many criminals if they have the intent to do something it is going to make a difference.
Chances are he will be ousted out of the town he is currently in, and then where will he move to? Every time he moves, he is one town closer to where I live. I will be one of those opposed to him being here.
Easy as that is to say, I wonder what could be done differently. The sad part is he should never have been released into the general public with so many having concerns, and likely nothing will be done to take him out of the general population until something bad happens.
Something has to change, it is bad enough we have to worry about safety in general - but to
know that someone is walking our streets that shouldn't be is wrong in many, many ways.
What would other options be for this type of offender?
