But an animal rights group objected to the mistreatment of chickens, and the school issued an open letter to fans this week calling for an end to the practice.
PETA responded to the latest incident at a game on Feb. 19th by writing to the University President claiming that at least 3 chickens were thrown on the court. In the letter they described chickens as very intelligent animals that appeared to have been subjected to
"deafening noise, bright lights, terror, abusive handling and likely death for the sake of amusement."
The athletic department issued a statement Tuesday saying that it considers live animals "contraband." Fans caught with animals or caught throwing any object onto a playing surface will be ejected and could face prosecution.
Can I just say....what a stupid ritual! I would be too concerned about the animals feelings myself, to even enjoy myself at the game in their shoes. I am glad they are banning this.
I am sure that any redneck who can throw a chicken ought to be able to come up with something a bit more clever.
