At 8:45 AM tomorrow morning I'll be entering a conference room to attend the first parole hearing of the man who molested my daughter. My thoughts on the subject are here.
In October of 1999 my family was rocked when we found out that the man my wife was married to at the time had been molesting my daughter since she was twelve. At that point she was 16 and one morning she just woke up and made up her mind to stop the abuse. She told her Mother who took her to the Police and the slimy bastard was arrested. I've alluded to the tragedy that brought my Wife and I back together,this was it. I'm not going to go into many details here, it's not my place to do so. All I want to say is that for the next 18 months our life was turned upside down as we went through one court hearing after another. Every time we had to sit in a courtroom with this monster my wife would be sick for days before, nerves about seeing the man she once trusted.
He was originally charged with 32 counts including various degrees of sexual assault (the most serious for things that happened before she was thirteen ),risk of injury to a minor, child pornography and drug possession. The State dropped the porn charges so the Feds could prosecute him for those,he got a year on the Federal charges, and we accepted a plea bargain on the rest of the offenses so we could spare my daughter the trauma of a trial. In the end he was sentenced to two five year terms to run consecutively. That was five years ago.
State law says you're eligible for parole after you serve fifty percent of your sentence. He's at that point and that's why tomorrow he get's his first shot at freedom. I never thought the original sentence was long enough and I certainly don't think he's served enough time. That's why tomorrow morning we'll drive an hour from home to try to make sure we help keep society safe for a little while longer.
You see, this guy likes little girls. Nobody ever knew but some of the details that came out after he was picked up were chilling. Even while he was out on bail before he pled out, he was stopped driving around with dolls and coloring books in his car. Does this sound like someone who should be walking free?
He continues to send my wife and his two bio-children cards and letters that are truly disturbing. He can't send them to us directly,he's not allowed, so he gets his mother to do it for him. She's also a piece of work. In the letters he tells the kids to be proud
white children and to be proud of their race. He warns them about listening to rap and other music that belongs to those
weaker races. Of course the kids never see that shit but I ask again, does this sound like someone who should be walking free?
So there it is. Tomorrow morning I'll get off work,gather up my family and make the drive to where the hearing will be held. I honestly don't know what's going to happen. If they deny him parole this time he'll have to do another two and a half years before he's eligible again. If they grant him his freedom my family will lose ours. There won't be a knock on the door or a car driving by that won't cause my wife to stop and worry it's him. Forget restraining or protective orders,he's not the type to care.
That's about it. I needed a place to vent and I can't think of a better place than the community here. It's only been five years,is that nearly enough time for destroying a young girls childhood?
