Great news: Mexico is promising to protect one of Nature's majestic creatures, the Monarch butterfly.
Mexican President Calderone, citing a no tolerance policy will use armed forces to enforce logging restrictions in areas sensitive to the butterfly breeding areas in the Sierra Madre mountains. 10 million new trees will be planted in the butterfly reserve areas to accommodate the millions of butterflies that migrate every fall to Mexico.
Also, a rare ancient oasis in danger of drying up will be protected and restored. "Stricter controls on the extraction of water from a giant reservoir that sits beneath an ancient oasis in the Great Chihuahuan Desert"
Mexico is also taking other environmental issues to protect their natural resources such as: applying, and "said $5 million would be spent protecting endangered Mexican species like jaguars, Mexican wolves, leatherback turtles and the Gulf of California harbor porpoise".
This is truly great news for our planet, however small a step it may be. I hope other nations follow suit to preserve our heritage.
For the last few summers we have had Monarchs in our back yard as they seem to like the cornflower plant. They are magnificent.
