The US Air Force developed a top-secret plan to detonate a nuclear bomb on the moon as a display of military might at the height of the Cold War.
An interesting article that delves into the thinking of some U.S. generals during the Cold War.
There was a top secret project, of which details are still scant, that examined the feasibility of detonating a nuclear bomb on the moon in a COld War show of force meant to impress the Soviets and others.
One interesting factor was the involvement of famed scientist Carl Sagan, who was hired to work on the project.
A great read.
