New 2.5 Inch SSD (Hard Drive) Record

by Mark Fleser.
A solid state drive is primarily a data storage device, for use in computing applications that traditionally use a hard disk drive.
Imagine a laptop hard drive that are faster than the ones in desktops and has no moving parts so it's not susceptible to damage due to shocks. Those are a couple of the aims of SSDs.

This particular drive breaks the previous 128GB capacity record and goes up to 160GB. Not that big of a jump, but it makes it more comparable, in terms of capacity, to other drives of the same physical size. In the current market 160GB for a laptop-sized drive is pretty spacious with the largest ones topping out at about 200GB.

This thing is no where near practical for the general market (or even the high end professional market) yet with the price per gigabyte is between $80-$115 which means this drive could go anywhere from $12,800 to $21,850 USD.

A step in the right direction from a technology standpoint, but about giant leap backwards from a practicality standpoint.
