Where is that Penguin Hiding?

WIth all the Mac/PC advertising happening, it seems that penguin is hiding and Linux isn't in the picture much. School budgets are tight and yet they all chose to pay money and follow the Microsoft route.
Money talks and that seems to be very clear in the debate happening between Mac and PC. What other options are there?
The one that isn't having a lot of news these days is Linux. Linux has made huge strides in becoming user friendly to the average user. And of course, it is free!
So why isn't it used more? The main reason is that most people are not familiar with Linux. Even our younger generation doesn't know how to begin to use it. Teaching computers in schools starts as early as grade one in schools and instead of taxing an already tight budget, school boards could be using a very basic computer running Linux. It amazes me that my kids have to share text books in class and yet they have full computer labs running Microsoft Windows.
The other reason is because Linux doesn't belong to one company - it is a coalition of many people working together. This is good in that you can work with the software to change it to how you want it to be. for those that are computer savvy enough to do so. The downside is that there isn't an advertising budget so there is not the awareness in the public that this is available.
Whether or not you chose to use Linux, the other option is using Open Office. Open Office is the same idea as Microsoft Office, and gives the same basic options including word processing and spreadsheet program for FREE.
I hope that the penguin (which is the logo for Linux) starts becoming known and that people are aware that there are other options than having to pay for an operating system for their computers.
