Saturday night two men were rescued from the icy waters of the Ottawa River.
Michael Machin and Joey Drew, both in their 20's, went into the Ottawa River when they became disoriented from white outs and the dark and could not see. One was riding his snowmobile and the other was riding his ATV. They drove into the open waters.
They both pulled themselves up onto a piece of ice that was surrounded by water. They called for help using their cell phone.
A lot of people responded to their rescue which took about three hours. The police, the fire department from both Pembroke and Petawawa, the Paramedic services and also the Petawawa military (427 squadron and 2 CER) all responded.
Both men were very lucky. Also very lucky their cell phones still worked after going into the icy waters. They spent the night at the hospital and both were released the next day.
Police also are warning people to stay clear of the ice on the Ottawa River between Pembroke and Petawawa because of the swift currents.
