New Cola freely offers recipe and instructions for making it
Computer shows have been featuring a mysterious silver can recently. The shiny silver can has a ring pull logo and the brand name "opencola" on it and the action statement "check out the source at opencola.com."
It tastes like a mix between Coke and Pepsi but is actually OpenCola, a brand of cola whose instructions for making it are freely available and modifiable. As is the case in open source software, anyone can make the drink or modify the recipe as long as they license their new recipe under the GNU General Public License.
The soft drink was originally intended to be a promotional tool to help explain open source software but since it's launch it's taken on a life of it's own. The company that launched it has become more well known for the drink than the software they offer... the website selling the drink has sold over 150,000 cans!
It appears the company that created it went out of business but because the recipe for the cola is open source anyone who wants to make their own can still enjoy the OpenCola flavor.
