Pop Quiz, readers: What defines success in the gaming business? Critical appreciation? Animated spin-offs? Okay, pencils down. Those who answered "Money" get a gold star.
Our buddies over at Next Generation ran through the numbers with a fine-toothed comb and came up with a definitive look on who made bank in 2006. It's an incredibly comprehensive and insightful look at the financial dealings of the industry, and it's chock full of more pie charts and bar graphs than you can shake a laser pointer at. (Potential Wii attachment?)
The piece even contains a detailed list of the top 100 money making games of last year. Take one drink for every Tom Clancy game, act surprised at the surplus of EA games, or simply count just how much Hannah Montana outranks Okami and marvel at the unfairness of it all.
The actual link to the list is here. Top 100 money making games of 2006.
Did anyone else notice that the top 3 systems that kept appearing and appearing over and over again was the Xbox 360, the nintendo DS, and the PS2? Well, you would expect the Xbox to be in there because it was the only next gen console for the whole entire year, but I was a bit suprised to see the DS games doing so well. Mainly because the DS is awesome, but yet a lot of the games seem pointless and just a bit on the boring side. Well, it just goes to show you on how many people will actually by Super Princess Peach for the DS.
I also noticed that there were few Wii and PS3 games in there. This is understandable because they came out practically a month before the year was over. Actually if you think about it, because they had less time and still made it onto the list, it goes to show you how much people love the new systems. I was just glad to see Resistance: Fall of Man on there and also my favourite, Guitar Hero 2 in the number 14 spot.
