"An outbreak of the Norwalk virus has forced a local hospital to temporarily close its doors to patients and visitors.
Global News is reporting that Bridgepoint Health, a Regent Park-area care facility for people with chronic diseases, is restricting access after an outbreak late last month infected about 50 people, 20 of them staff members.
The station reported the virus has spread through several units of the hospital, known as the Riverdale Hospital until a decade ago.
The London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) experienced a similar outbreak over New Year’s. The virus, which causes a two-day onset of intense vomiting and diarrhoea, spread to two units during the outbreak.
The gastrointestinal virus is not fatal, but can compromise the health of sensitive patients in long-term care facilities, an LHSC release said.
The virus shut down New Brunswick’s Mount Allison University last October, when more than 100 students and staff became infected. "
