article imageEditGrid - New Online Spreadsheet, Better Than Google Spreadsheets

By Chris V. Thangham     Feb 15, 2007 in Business
New Online Spreadsheet EditGrid is better than Google Spreadsheets.
The online spreadsheet market is crowded and the big players include Google Spreadsheets (as part of Google Docs & Spreadsheets), Zoho Sheet (as part of the Zoho Office Suite -- disclosure, Zoho is a R/WW sponsor), WikiCalc (a part of SocialText), ThinkFree Calc (as part of Thinkfree Office). But EditGrid is the only standalone online spreadsheet offering.
EditGrid is a Spreadsheet online program like Google Spreadsheets, doesn't require any software to be installed in your computer. The author of this has done a good comparison betweenEditGrid and Google Spreadsheets and says EditGrid is a better spreadsheet program than Google as well as any other online spreadsheet available in the market.
EditGrid boasts real-time-update (RTU), allowing users to see changes immediately when someone is editing the same spreadsheet, and extensive collaboration features. Google also has this but EditGrid seems to be doing a better job in this area. EditGrid has another feature called Remote dat, which gets the data from the web like the current stock information, exchange currency value and updates your websheet.
One major advantage with EditGrid is, it has about 500 built in functions like the Math functions, whereas Google Spreadsheet has only 250. EditGrid have done a comparison with Google and Microsoft Excel [url= http://www.editgrid.com/tnc/pkchan/EditGrid_v._Google?ro=1 t=_blank]here.
The Owner of EditGrid, David Lee says that this EditGrid will be a standalone product not an office product like Google or Zoho Office, which will be a minor problem when competing with Google or Microsoft. But still the product looks real nice, better than Google Spreadsheet look or other interfaces.
I checked it, has one neat feature, you can collaborate online instantaneously so both can see the spreadsheet and edit it right there. it has the basic free and paid membership ($5/month), there is SSL, User account management, Spreadsheet management, custom login, unique namespace and customer support for paid service. But many features are available free, so you can try it out before you opt to use the premium membership.
