Today, the Mint is slated to begin circulating a new gold-colored $1 coin featuring the face of George Washington, the country’s first president.
The awaited new DOLLAR COIN has been officially released today and is in the mint. This new dollar coin is supposed to break americans away from the beloved dollar bill and bring us back to the age of coin money.
These coins are supposed feature past presidents as they come out. The Mint started with George Washington, the country’s first president. The schedule is every three months to issue dollar coins with a new president, in succession all the way to Richard M. Nixon in 2016.
"Our research indicates that, like the 50 state quarter coins, the presidential $1 coins will be popular with millions of Americans," said U.S. Mint Director Edmund Moy
"Banks should start receiving shipments of the new coins in the days ahead, and within weeks the currency could end up in the pockets and wallets of Americans.IBC Bank has already ordered the new coins from the Federal Reserve and expects to get them and start distributing them within a month."
The structure and size of the coins:
The Mint is making sure the coins, which are golden in color and slightly larger and thicker than a quarter, will be widely available so people will not be disappointed when they show up at banks looking for the coins.
These coins are going to be heavier to carry around and don't normally fit well into people's wallets, do you think this new coin will be loved or dreaded. I truly think it is a bad idea to go back to coins just because of the weight and wallet issue. What do you think, let me know!
