Some journalists hate bloggers: They can't write well, they threaten mainstream media, and struggle to convey cohesive thoughts. It's those people that need to wake up and realize 55 per cent of America disagrees.
Digital Journal -- According to an online survey released today, a majority of Americans believe bloggers are "important to the future of journalism." The We Media survey showed 55 per cent of Americans believe bloggers are essential to delivering news, while a whopping 74 per cent say citizen journalism will play a vital role in the future.
It's not news to the blogosphere, where bloggers continue to break news and make news before it ends up on television, radio or print.
The survey of 5,384 U.S. adults was done by John Zogby as part of an iFocos conference on media innovation.
Internet-based media, according to 53 per cent of respondents, will see large developments in the future and 74 per cent say the Web has had a positive impact on the overall quality of "capital-J" journalism.
"In the national survey of adults, 72 per cent said they were dissatisfied with the quality of American journalism today," the press release reads. "A majority of conference–goers who were polled on the subject agreed – 55 per cent said they were dissatisfied, and 61 per cent said they believed traditional journalism is out of touch with what Americans want from their news."
What some might find surprising is that mainstream media seems to be agreeing that bloggers are playing an important role in media. Almost 90 per cent of "media insiders" think positively about blogging.
“We are now seeing mainstream acceptance of what we call the Power of Us - the value, credibility, and vital expression of citizen and collaborative media,” said Dale Peskin, managing director of iFOCOS, the organization that conducts the annual We Media conference. “We’ve arrived at a tipping point. A new definition of democratic media is emerging in our society.”
Interesting Findings:
- Dissatisfaction with today’s news reportage is greater among those online respondents who identified themselves as conservative – 88% said they were unhappy with journalism, while 95% of “very conservative” respondents said the quality of journalism today is not what it should be.
- Among those respondents identifying themselves as liberal, 51% said they are dissatisfied with the quality of journalism. Dissatisfaction levels were also highest among older respondents – 78% of those age 65 and older said they are dissatisfied. Most respondents (65%) also said they believe traditional journalism is out of touch with what Americans want from their news, with the highest levels of dissatisfaction with traditional journalism among those age 70 and older (74%), the very conservative (95%), and libertarians (89%).
- Despite concerns about its quality, journalism is important to their community, according to 72% of survey respondents. More Americans (81%) said websites are important as a source of news, although television ranked nearly as high (78%), followed by radio (73%). Newspapers and magazines trailed – 69% said newspapers and 38% said magazines were important. While blogs were rated as important sources by 30% of the online respondents, they were not considered as solid a news source as the backyard fence – 39% said their friends and neighbors are an important source of information.

They can't write well, they threaten mainstream media, and struggle to convey cohesive thoughts.
I'm sorry,I'll try harder! lol
Honestly,I love to see those numbers by demographic. If the positive numbers are that high with older people,we've won the war.

I am sew soree that me can no talk good on teh interrnets but i gives me importetn thoughts!
Seriously, I'd be willing to wager that there are quite a few bloggers that can do exactly the same thing that professionals (or better!). I'm sorry that I don't have a degree in journalism, but that doesn't mean I don't know how to type or convey my message clearly or effectively :P.

I think this site is proof enough that bloggers are worth their weight in literary gold :)

I couldn't agree more. Being an English teacher by training, I'm particularly sensitive to poor writing, whether by journalists or webmasters or bloggers. Quite frankly, reading DJ I'm impressed with just how well DJ members express themselves. Sure, some have language issues but if English isn't their first language, that's understandable. They'll get better as time goes on.
As for the journalists, I get pretty annoyed when I'm reading the paper and the first and third paragraphs say the same thing. I know that's what they teach journalists to do, but quite frankly, I get it the first time!

Hey I'm a lay journalist and proud of it.

I’d have to say blogging is only helpful to get other opinions on an issue. A blog will never deliver reliable news—it can’t be taken seriously.
So it might play a part in breaking the news, but until I see it in print, it’s just a rumour. After that let someone with credentials take over, someone who people know and can trust, someone with sources.
I’m not going to believe something blogger_229 writes on the web. How do I know where they got their info? That’s why magazines and a lot of newspapers have fact checking.
I’m not against blogging or bloggers, but it’s definitely not where I get my intake of daily news. It simply can’t be trusted. That’s why print journalism will never die.
But that’s a whole other discussion.

Blogger journalists are no less than actual so called professional jounalists if the work is done in honesty

well if the blog has got reliable sources to back up the info why not? and if you see a blog with links and it's a professional looking blog, i would tend to take it serious. blogging is in, you can see alot of corporate sites that have .dot com sites but they trying to have the image like a blog on blogger. Blogs rule!!!! is what I say. enough censorship of media, and the news just coming from a couple of different media sources...it's completly an open market now... I bet this site has broken more news then alot of corporate media..DJ alone replaces tv news by far...lol do you know every day i turn the channels in the evening and watch their evening news and everything they have to say, I've read on DJ....the one stop..one source for the news...sites like DJ and bloggers are taking over.
-
True, if the blogger has sources to back it up then sure it's reliable. But there's no way of telling where the sources are from or if they're even real. Unless of course it's a corporate site that's made a name for itself and has something to lose if they deliver false info. I don't know, I'm new to this site and new to this blogging business. I've just always thought of blogs as people ranting about certain issues, I'm sure my opinion will change the more I learn about it.
And just out of curiousity, can anyone write a news blog on this site? Do the people who are posting these news blogs actually do the research and get all the quotes through their own interviews or are they taken from professional journalists?

Some Texas legislators want bloggers to have the same rights as mainstream media in covering the legislature from the floor. With mainstream media coverage shrinking by half, from 66 reporters in 2001 to 37 in 2006, bloggers are filling the gaps in reporting and some desire the protections and respect afforded their mainstream counterparts.
-
Another aspect is the corporate media constant tendency to mingle ideologically with the rest of the corporate guys. After all they are themselves just few more corporations. Only 6 (!) of them control today the information distribution all over north America. They scratch each other's back and hide or under-report stories that can make a fellow corporation pay for its deeds, see "project censored". The public broadcasting have identical attribute (it is commercially dependent, also through politicians). At any place and any time they tend to become impure. The unattached nature of the Net's new people's driven news media is an unbeatable superiority. As long as it won't be hurt and restricted for that. Severe attempt are being made already, see McCain's bill proposal. The public is feeling when it is being cheated for to long and votes with his fingers.

why dont you tell us something we dont know

I wrote a post on my blog a while back about after I read an article he wrote on the ethics of blogging. http://blog-ezine.com/beehive/bee-hive/ethics-of-blogging.php
The worst part of the whole article was that he was criticizing bloggers while writing about things that were not the facts.
Bloggers and Citizen Journalists offer a unique venue and the more it grows to mainstream the more it will become the norm. If something happens in the news now I tune into the blogs not the news first.

I think that independent media journalists and bloggers will redefine the way news is reported. While mainstream news journalists will find the story, approve it through the proper authorities, and then print what will become the standardized version of the story. Independent journalists rely on witnesses and people who know first-hand what happened, and they don't have to have their story approved. This can be good, but on the flip side, it could have side effects. We'll see what happens, but it's a true possibility that things will begin to change more than they have, and both types of media will be nationally accepted.

I find it interesting that when you blog you need to site a "reliable source." I really do not consider the media a reliable source anymore. I have seen far too many facts become distorted.
I have sources that are in the government, in the military, etc. All credible people. The only thing keeping my sources from being credible like an average journalist is a piece of paper.
I took a critical thinking course in college, I am sure my judge of character is about the same as any two bit journalist at the New York Times.

Does that mean we have to be responsible now? (ha)
F.Y.I.
General Electric (G.E.) owns N.B.C., M.S.N.B.C, etc.
they are also one of the largest (5th I think) Defense Contractors.
Thats right NEWS and BOMBS! ( and fridges )
Mainstream media is goin down!

I would hope that means we should be responsible. There are plenty things I hold back from posting in the interest of responsible blogging! lol
