article imagePet rat passes disease to Tumwater veterinarian

By Brandigal (Donna)     Feb 13, 2007 in Health
A pet rat gave a vet a disease that usually attacks dogs and cats.
Mr.Nibbles was taken to the vet because he was scratching himself. The vet treated the vet and last week had to be rushed to hospital. He was in critical condition. Blood tests shoed he had the disease called Leptospirosis. It was passed on by the rat.
The vet is still in very ill but expected to recover. The disease has symptoms of the flu but a lot more dangerous. It can cause kidney and liver problems. In some cases it can be fatal.
Rat urine can also cause the outbreak. It can make dogs and cats sick as well. They say to make sure your pet is vaccinated and only have rats that come from a shelter.
I learned something new today. I did not know having a rat was that dangerous. But then again i would only have one as a pet if i got it from a pet store. I would not just adopt a rat from outside. But now i would not have one period.
