ATV, Boy Crash Through Lake's Ice
Firefighters returned to Coventry Lake in Connecticut on Monday in an attempt to recover an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) that plunged through the ice with its 11-year-old rider on Sunday. The boy was unharmed, but the scare renewed concerns about the dangers of thin ice.
Their efforts, however, were in vain. "It's not worth anybody getting hurt for an ATV that's not coming out of there. You're not going to see that until spring," said Chief Joe Carilli of the Coventry Fire Department.
The 11-year-old boy was rescued unharmed on Sunday after he crashed through the ice. His father, 48-year-old Jay Morgan, of Mystic, was ticketed for allowing a minor to operate an unregistered ATV.
The really silly thing is that while the efforts to recover the sunken ATV was under way, more people were seen riding their all-terrain vehicles on the ice!
"There's about 12 inches of ice, so you're pretty secure. Just stay on the ice," an ice fisherman said. "If you look in the center of the ice, you can see from one end, all the way to the other end, there is an opening, and that's from the underwater springs. People aren't aware of those things," said Capt. Robert Breault of the Coventry Fire Department.
Coventry fire officials said that they are constantly issuing warnings to stay off the ice, but people continue to walk across the ice.
