Go now Britons tell Blair

By Fortunesfool     Feb 4, 2007 in Politics
A new poll finds the majority of Britons want Tony Blair to resign now.
The ICM poll published in the Sunday Express found 56 percent of those polled believed Blair should resign now. Loyalty is even beginning to fray amoung Labour supporters, 43 percent said Blair should leave his post immediately.
Blair has been battered by the continuing 'cash-for-honours' scandle. Labour's top fundraiser and a top Blair aide was arrested last month on suspicion of obstructing justice and police are continuing to investigate whether Labour and other parties recommend donors for honours. The ICM poll found that 66 percent of those interviewed believed Blair's Downing Street office had tried to cover up evidence regarding the investigation into political funding. A majority of Labour supporters also feel there had been an attempted cover-up, 56 percent of those questioned agreed with the supporters of other parties.
The Conservative oppostion now consistenlty leads the Labour government in opinion polls. The 'cash-for-honours' scandal and also a deep and growing unpopularity of the Iraq war, both things Blair is intimately and personally involved in, are the main factors causing the government's slide into electoral oblivion. One would have to feel that Blair owes it as much to his party as to his country to set aside personal vanity and leave office now.
