A Call to Fight Neglected Diseases

By acehigh409     Feb 1, 2007 in Health
The head of the World Health Organization is calling on the international community to help in the fight against neglected diseases.
"There are diseases affecting a billion people in the developing world that need much more attention from the international community, the head of the World Health Organization said on Thursday."
Margaret Chan, the head of the WHO, called these diseases neglected diseases, as they are low profile.
They are diseases such as Schistosomiasis, Lymphatic filariasis, and Trypanosomiasis. They tend to be found in the poorest countries and do not affect the international community. There is little financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies to develop treatments and "poor health care systems also hamper the delivery of any drugs that do exist."
I agree that the international community should get involved in helping with this issue. Our charitable efforts are sometimes best made when they help people help themselves. Certainly, helping people overcome debilitating disease, should fall into this category.
