The Senate on Friday voted unanimously to confirm the nomination of Army Lt. Gen. David Petraeus to command U.S. troops in Iraq at a time when President Bush is building up American forces there.
Petraeus' 81-0 approval was in contrast to the widespread public and congressional opposition to Bush's plan to send 21,500 more troops to Iraq. Congress is moving toward votes in coming weeks on nonbinding resolutions opposing the troop build up.
Public sentiment has turned strongly against a war that has dragged on for nearly four years with more than 3,000 American dead and violence unabated by insurgents and sectarian militias.
I agree with this new general, this "war" has been dragged on for to long now. When Bush first proposed and announced war against Iraq, he claimed that it would be a quick movement, initailly to disable all current threats. Well, it is four years later and they still seem to be having problems disabiling those threats.
I guess the reason for this is that once they clear one area of terrorists, more seem to pop up out of no where. In this case, Bush seems to think it is best to send in a lot more troops. But that would mean more casualties I guess. I don't have a solution myself of what to do, I'm not a military expert, but I think that this new general might.
