Record Store Day 2014, April 19, is right around the corner and today the much anticipated U.S. list of special titles was released to the public.
Now in its 7th year Record Store Day is succeeding at getting people back into their local record stores. One of the ways they have done this is by getting artists and labels to do exclusive title releases to actual brick and mortar independent retailers. The event has reached a level that music fans and the media are excited about the publication of "the list." Leading up to publication day there are hopes, predictions and sometimes a leak or two of what might be or actually is on it.
Record Store Day releases come in three categories: Record Store Day Exclusives, Record Store Day Limited Run/Regional Focus releases and Record Store Day First releases. Exclusives are only available in-store on Record Store Day. Limited Run/Regionals are also in-store only on Record Store Day but not available in all stores either due to regional relevance and/or extremely limited availability, under 1000 copies. Finally 'Record Store Day 1st' titles will eventually be available at other retailers after Record Store Day.
The U.S. list has everything: legends Joan Baez and David Bowie, current female superstars Katy Perry and Hayley Williams (Paramore), great electronica producers Glitch Mob and Skrillex and so much more. Everyone who stops by their record store will find at least one compact or vinyl disc or even a cassette or two that suits their tastes.
Record Store Day isn't exclusive to the United States. Canada, the UK, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, France and Mexico also participate and each will have their own list.
