article imageTobyMac talks about new single 'Speak Life' and future plans Special

By Markos Papadatos     Apr 9, 2014 in Music
Christian music superstar TobyMac discussed his latest studio album "Eye On It," as well as his current single "Speak Life."
His album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts and he made history, marking the fourth time a Christian album has topped the overall Billboard 200 charts. "I was surprised, but it felt really great to know that people would support it," he said.
He has sold over 11 million albums and he has won two Grammy awards, as well as 13 Gospel Music Association (GMA) Dove Awards, as well as Billboard Music awards and American Music Awards (AMAs). "It's an honor to be recognized for your work and to be able to do what I do, which is to make music. I always want to make music that turns people's eyes towards something better," he said. "Winning an American Music Award meant a lot to me since the people vote for that one. I have always looked at music as something to serve the people."
Most recently, TobyMac was on an acoustic tour with fellow Christian singer-songwriter Matthew West. "I love touring with Matthew. He is a great artist, friend and songwriter. He is an inspiring guy," he said.
His music has been featured on The Golf Channel, the NFL Network, Fox Sports, ESPN's ESPY Awards, as well as such films as Hancock and Transporter 2 and in the hit CBS television show "CSI: NY." "I love when my music is used in film and television, since it's just another way of getting the message of hope out there," he said.
TobyMac is actively involved in organization and non-profits for diversity. He founded the E.R.A.C.E. Foundation, which promotes racial reconciliation, and he established Camp Electric for young musicians who hope to impact the world. "Camp Electric is something I cherish and I'm honored to be a part of for the young believers that are out there making music. I want to encourage them and help their vision of music. I want to be a part of their lives and I want to share what I have earned along the way," he said.
He continued, "The E.R.A.C.E. Foundation is something that we started that sheds light and helps support ministries that are trying to reach across racial barriers and love all people."
TobyMac shared that he co-wrote his latest single "Speak Life" with songwriter Ryan Stevenson and it was inspired by a quote from the late author Brennan Manning. "One of the quotes that stood out to me and made me want to change the way that I live is this: 'in every encounter we either give life or drain it, there is no neutral exchange.' When I read that quote, it made me want to think about the conversations that I have had throughout the day and it made me think about them differently. I want to 'speak life,'" he said.
For TobyMac, success is defined as "loving my family, loving my wife and children, loving the people I work with, my band, my managers, my agent and friends."
He concluded our interview with a message for his fans. "I hope this single reminds you that you can speak life to everyone you come in contact with every day, whether it is through your words, or the look in your eyes, or the smile on your face," he said.
In the beginning of May, TobyMac will be going on tour with rock band Skillet and hip hop artist Lecrae. "I am excited to do an outdoor amphitheater tour with both of these acts. I think all three of us are geared for outdoor, festive concerts. I am also in the studio writing songs for the new record. I have three or four that I really like and I am hoping for seven or eight more and hand in, and I hope to give the people a fresh batch of songs," he said.
Although he has had the privilege to duet with some great female artists, he listed Alicia Keys as a dream duet choice. "I think Alicia is a special girl and she has a vibe about her that, vocally, would be really interesting to team up with," he said.
