article imageThe Script's Danny O'Donoghue talks CD, OneRepublic tour and fans Special

By Markos Papadatos     Jun 24, 2014 in Music
Danny O'Donoghue is an Irish singer-songwriter, best-known as the lead vocalist and pianist of the acclaimed rock band The Script.
He chatted about his latest album, experiences on the national tour with OneRepublic, their future plans and he revealed his dream female duet choices.
The rock group hails from Dublin, Ireland, and it is comprised of front-man Danny O'Donoghue on lead vocals and piano, Mark Sheehan on backing vocals and lead guitar, and drummer Glen Power. They have sold over 17.7 million single tracks and over 1.3 million albums worldwide; moreover, their "Breakeven" hit single alone sold 2.7 million units. "The song 'Breakeven' gravitated towards people since it has emotional lyrics," he said.
O'Donoghue also served as a coach during the first two series of the reality singing talent show The Voice UK, along with Jessie J.
When asked what motivates him from day to day, he remarked, "I have this love affair with music and I do think that it can change the world. It is medicine to people's ears and I believe it heals you," he said.
Their third studio album, entitled #3, featured their lead single "Hall of Fame," which is a collaboration with hip-hop artist will.i.am. "I am big believer in songs that speak about the truth. We wrote as many songs as we possibly could, and then we sat down and selected the ones that hit us in the heart," he said. "We want to change people and hit them with emotions."
He shared that "Hall of Fame" was the song that came late during the writing process of the third studio album. "We wrote the song leading up to the Olympics and it got that theme. It honors everyday folks that are doing fantastic work, so we wanted to write a song for those people and it has taken a life of its own. At the time, I was a coach on the show The Voice back in the UK with will.i.am, Jessie J and Tom Jones. My friend will.i.am heard it once and wanted it for his record, but we did it as a collaboration and it was our first worldwide No. 1. It was amazing," he said.
The CD was a critical success, selling over 120,000 copies to date. "That was fantastic. We were truly blessed," he exclaimed.
While it is extremely difficult for O'Donoghue to select personal favorite tunes from his third album, a few that stand out to him include "Glowing," "Six Degrees of Separation," as well as "Hall of Fame," the latter of which he dubbed as "out of the box" and "moving," especially when he plays it in his live shows. "There are a lot of songs on that record that I really, really like," he admitted.
O'Donoghue noted that the song "If You Could See Me Now" is also really "deep and meaningful" since it pays homage to his late father, and to guitarist Mark Sheehan's parents. "It was more of a reflection of what happened and it's a really powerful song," he said.
They supported pop-rock group OneRepublic during the first leg of their national tour, which wraps up on June 29, and they will rejoin them on July 30. "That was amazing," he said. "We have been friends for a long time and we were always threatening them to go on tour together since we knew it was going to be crazy."
He revealed that the group has a brand new album that is in the works, where they are putting their final touches and they are working on coming up with a name for the upcoming studio effort.
O'Donoghue listed label-mate Adele as his dream female duet choice. "I think our voices will work very well together," he said, and he went on to compliment such renowned songstresses as Ellie Goulding and Robyn. "They are both brilliant. Robyn and Ellie should do a collaboration with us. That would be awesome."
For the group's loyal fans, he concluded, "Thank you so much to the fans for all of the support, for coming to our shows this past year and buying the albums. We don't actually consider them fans, we consider them one big family."
