Download Festival organisers have decided to rename its main stage to the “Stephen Sutton Stage” for this year’s music event, which is due to be held between June 13 to 15, at Donnington Park.
The news was relayed in a statement issued by the organisers of the festival. “In recognition of [Stephen’s] epic fundraising efforts and for being an inspiration to us all, after speaking to his family, we’ve decided to name the main stage the Stephen Sutton Stage at this year’s festival,” the statement read. “We’ll also be keeping [his] fundraising going at Download, too. Rock in Peace, Stephen.”
Stephen Sutton, just 19, died almost a fortnight ago, following a five-year battle with cancer. The teenager’s plight touched the hearts of people all over the world, helping him to raise a staggering £4 million for charity.
The young man, from Burntwood in Essex in the UK, set up a Facebook page — Stephen’s story — and, initially, raised £10,000 for charity. Hand in hand with his fundraising efforts, Stephen reported on a “bucket list” of things he wanted to do before he died. One of those was the wish to attend the Download Festival, which he achieved last year.
The Download Festival statement confirmed how they had been “honoured” to have Stephen at their 2013 and how they were “very sad to hear about Stephen Sutton’s passing.”
In April this year, following a “final” selfie video Stephen uploaded went viral, the £10,000 sum that he’d raised up till that point, mushroomed to in excess of £3 million!
At the time, Stephen believed he was about to die but, against everyone’s expectations, he rallied sufficiently and was released from hospital. Sadly, as reported by BBC News, he was readmitted to on May 11 — after developing “developed "breathing difficulties caused by the re-growth of tumours” — and died a few days later, in his sleep, on May 14.
The news of Stephen’s death was announced by his mother, Jane Sutton, writing on her “courageous, selfless, inspirational” son’s Facebook page. “The ongoing support and outpouring of love for Stephen will help greatly at this difficult time, in the same way as it helped Stephen throughout his journey,” she said.
Since Stephen’s death, his fundraising campaign has risen to almost £4 million.
