Regarding her new music and music video, she said, “‘Damsel in Distress’ focuses on the ever-important issue of the empowerment of women, which I have been passionate about for years. Like my first single, ‘Damsel’ has a charitable component. I am donating the profits from the purchasing of ‘Damsel’ on iTunes and Amazon to Girls Inc. of New York City.”
She added, “In writing ‘Damsel,’ I was interested in creating both a song and a video that would be fun to listen to and watch, respectively. This choice to make ‘Damsel’ more upbeat than my first single, ‘Angel on Our Shoulder,’ was definitely intentional. In my experience, people respond best to messages that they enjoy receiving, so I wanted to ensure that this presentation would be more entertaining than preachy.”
Her single was picked as the “feminist pop anthem” of 2015 by Bust Magazine. “It’s hard to describe how thrilled I was when I saw ‘Damsel in Distress’ described as the ‘feminist pop anthem’ of 2015. I’m still a little incredulous that it actually happened! I couldn’t imagine a better compliment,” she said.
She is donating all net profits from the purchase of the song “Damsel in Distress” to Girls Inc. of New York. “First of all, I wanted to find an organization that works in my area. I believe that people too often focus on problems in other communities, even when others face extraordinary challenges in their own neighborhoods. The most change can be made, I believe, when people focus on an area that they know well. I chose Girls Inc. of New York City in particular because, as a student, I am keenly attuned to the importance of education of all kinds. This organization provides tons of classes to underprivileged girls in all five boroughs of my home, New York City. These programs range from economics to STEM fields to pregnancy prevention to community service and to, I believe most importantly, the cultivation of self-respect,” she explained.
On her future plans, she said, “Honestly, for the next little bit, my music career will be on hold while I focus on the college application process. I just finished junior year of high school a few weeks ago, and over the next few months, I have a lot to do. Once I find out where I’ll be going to college (hopefully sooner rather than later!), I can become more intensively involved with my music again.”
