Rihanna has been announced as the winner of the 2014 CFDA Fashion Icon Award. She joins the ranks of style icons like Lady Gaga and Kate Moss with this presigious honor.
The 26-year-old Rihanna will be presented with the award on June 2 at New York City's Lincoln Center. She is currently the face of Balmain's campaign for Spring, 2014.
In a statement announcing the presenting of the award, Steven Kolb, CDFA CEO, said, “We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon Award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory.”
Rihanna has demonstrated a confident approach to style in the past year, putting on everything from a fur sash to green lipstick. You could see all these incarnations at the news site, Immortal News.
Looking back, how the past year has been landmark for Rihanna's fashion credentials is easy to see. During that time, she has positioned herself as a true fashion icon. Karl Lagerfeld recently flew her to locations in Dallas and Paris where she sat front-row at two recent fashion shows by Chanel. The two have become friends in recent months.
Rihanna's style has now proved its award-winning caliber and that is owed in no small part to her stylist Mel Ottenberg and her stylist Adam Selman. They have helped construct a style for Rihanna that at the same time high-fashion and an equal measure street wear. They have developed an eclectic mix for her, combining couture with cutting edge sneakers and t-shirt designs.
Mel Ottenberg is widely respected throughout the fashion industry. He has worked with magazines such as Purple, Details and Vogue Hommes International.
Rihanna turned up at a Lakers game last April in a tank top and sweat pants by KTZ, a top London-based brand. She paired the ensemble with a dog collar-style necklace and stillettos.
Earlier this month, Rihanna attended the Comme des Garcons fall 2014 fashion show wearing a fur stole with the word “fear” emblazoned upon it. The stole was created by Hyein Seo. The Korean designer debuted it just a few weeks earlier at the Vfiles runway exhibition, part of New York Fashion Week.
Both of these ensembles mirror Rhianna's ideas on fashion which she revealed in 2011 to Vogue. “When I am putting looks together, I dare myself to make something work,” she said.
“I always look for the most interesting silhouette or something that’s a little off, but I have to figure it out. I have to make it me. I think that’s the thrill in fashion.”
Her affinity for pushing boundaries has inspired some of Rihanna's fellow artists, including Ariana Grande and Rita Ora in the creation of their own public personae, but no one pulls it off the way Rihanna can. Her look has garnered so much attention that even English high street lable River Island has joined forces with her to produce two collections which she designed.
For the occasion, Rihanna enlisted Mr. Selman for the occasion as overseer to the ranges’ creative direction. By hiring him, Rihanna helped to pave the way for him to develop his own fashion label.
Selman had gained so much notoriety through working with Rihanna, that he was able to launch his collection at New York Fashion Week. The coverage was rife with mention of his work with Rihanna.
