article imageReview: Phillip Phillips wows on the 'Toyota Concert Series' on 'Today' Special

New York - On June 27, singer-songwriter Phillip Phillips performed for NBC's "Toyota Summer Concert Series" for the "Today" show at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City.
Co-anchor Matt Lauer made the opening remarks, and took the audience on a journey of Phillips' "rapid rise to fame," which consisted of him winning the eleventh season of American Idol. He noted that his first album went platinum and he is following up that success with his latest album, which features the current radio single "Raging Fire."
He went on to sing his latest Top 10 hit "Raging Fire," where he was backed by a full band, which included trumpets, saxophone, drums, guitar players and two background vocalists. Every crowd member at Rockefeller Plaza was singing the words from the chorus back to Phillips, which was quite flattering for the young star.
Phillips wore a blue buttoned-down shirt and blue jeans, while accompanying himself on acoustic guitar.
"Let your heart be next to mine, Before the flame goes out tonight, We can live until we die," Phillips sang, in one of the highlight verses of the song. He was able to silence the other instruments during this segment, and the audience got to enjoy his rich yet distinct baritone vocals that echoed Dave Matthews.
Equally impressive was his live version of his smash single "Gone, Gone, Gone," which he incorporated as a crowd sing-along. He had the audience clapping along during the lines, "Like a drum, baby ,don't stop beating."
He also sang another tune from his new album, "Lead On," which had a soulful and blues vibe to it.
The Verdict
Overall, Phillips' concert in New York City was superb, featuring his warm and pleasant vocals. It is no wonder that he is such a phenom in the adult contemporary music world. He truly deserves all of the success that is coming his way.
