Imbruglia is able to dust off the Daft Punk original and breathe fresh life in this tune, by bringing out the rawness of its lyrics. It has infectious hooks and a strong melody to it.
“Now I thought about what I wanna say, but I never really know where to go, so I chained myself to a friend, cause I know it unlocks like a door,” Imbruglia sings.
Her song’s music video, directed by Joe Stephenson, is a real treat as well, especially due to its cinematography, where the viewer can easily recall The Stepford Wives. Imbruglia looks stunning in the video, and her vocals are haunting yet beautiful.

The Verdict
Overall, Natalie Imbruglia is superb on “Instant Crush” and her voice is as crystalline as ever. If this song is any indication of how her new album Male is going to be or sound like, then her fans and listeners are in for a real treat. Daft Punk and Julian Casablancas from The Strokes, who sings lead on the original recording, would be smiling upon this brave rendition by Imbruglia, especially since it is sung from a female standpoint. The single garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
