article imageReview: Maddie and Tae rebel at bro-country with 'Girl In A Country Song' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 9, 2014 in Music
Country duo Maddie and Tae released their sassy breakthrough single "Girl In A Country Song," where they take a firm stance against bro-country.
Bro-country is a term that has been coined for songs that deal with the subject matter of pickup trucks, tailgates, alcohol drinking, partying, bikinis and pretty girls.
It has a similar message to country songstress Maggie Rose's latest single "Girl In Your Truck Song."
Their music video is quite witty and clever and it shows things from their perspective as girls have been perceived in country and they have men play their parts in the clips with much humor. Maddie and Tae are seen playing such musical instruments as guitar and mandolin.
"We used to get a little respect, Now we're lucky if we even get, To climb up in your truck, keep my mouth shut and ride along, Down some old dirt road we don't even wanna be on, And be the girl in a country song," they sing.
They make references to country singer Tyler Farr's hit single "Redneck Crazy," and to such traditional country artists as Conway Twitty and George Strait, both of which are the ultimate paradigms of male vocalists that did not denigrate women in any way in their songs.
It is a real treat hearing this fun tune played on New York's hit country station, Nash FM 94.7.
As Digital Journal reported, Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye, better known as Maddie and Tae, were the inaugural artists to be signed on Dot Records, a new imprint of the Big Machine Label Group.
The Verdict
Maddie and Tae's spitfire single "Girl In A Country Song" garners 4 out of 5 stars. It is definitely an anthem of female empowerment, and the female country listeners can relate to it, since not that many women are played consistently on country radio stations, with the exception of Taylor Swift, Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. Hopefully, country radio stations will be playing more females as a result of songs like "Girl In A Country Song."
