Texas-born songstress Amanda Shires served as her opening act, and she was incredible. Womack was backed by a gifted four-piece band. She took her fans on a trip down memory lane with “Never Again, Again,” as well as her autobiographical “Twenty Years and Two Husband Ago” and “Little Past Little Rock.”
She changed the pace of her set with the witty and up-tempo “Buckaroo,” which was a great deal of fun. The bluesy “Solitary Thinkin'” was pure soul, while “You’ve Got To Talk to Me” had a catchy, sing-along chorus and “Last Call” was an alluring vocal performance.
Womack’s multi-platinum signature tune “I Hope You Dance” sounded as compelling and inspirational as ever. One of the highlight vocals of the evening was her powerhouse version of “The Way I’m Livin,'” the title track of her latest studio album. Equally exquisite were “Send It On Down,” “Sleeping With The Devil” and “Chances Are,” all of which are included on her newest studio effort.
The Verdict
To quote a lyric from her “I Hope You Dance” single, Lee Ann Womack has not lost her sense of wonder. She was absolutely spectacular at City Winery. Her vocals were ethereal and heavenly. She managed to stay true to her country roots, and her love for the genre showcased throughout the night. There were no gimmicks: only a woman with an impeccable talent that allowed her lilting soprano voice do all the talking. She deserves to be nominated for the 2015 Country Music Association (CMA) “Female Vocalist of the Year” award, as she stands out as one of country’s greatest vocalists and song stylists. Whoever has yet to see her perform live is seriously missing out. They ought to add a Lee Ann Womack concert ticket to their bucket list; they certainly won’t regret it. Her City Winery show garnered 5 out of 5 stars.
