Review: Largerthanlife fantastic at Mulcahy’s for 90s music night (Includes first-hand account)

The 90’s Band opened the show for them, and they were able to warm up the stage with songs by such artists as Barenaked Ladies, No Doubt (“Just a Girl”), Oasis (“Wonderwall”), and Alanis Morissette (“Head over Feet”), among many others.

Largerthanlife is made up of Edvin, Chris, Devin and Toly. Dressed in white suits, Largerthanlife began their set with their namesake tune, “Larger Than Life,” which was upbeat and fun. “Make some noise. C’mon,” Edvin said.

They immediately broke into N’ Sync’s “Tearin’ Up My Heart,” and they were able to nail their dance moves to the tee. “Everybody put your hands up,” Edvin said, and they continued with “Peaches & Cream,” as the stage was graced in yellow lights.

Their set was quite eclectic especially with a cover of Boyz II Men’s “Motown Philly,” and they managed to get their fans to wave their hands up in the air for “Hangin’ Tough” by New Kids on the Block. “Alright, Mulcahy’s. Are you having a good time so far?” Edvin inquired.

They went on to sing a medley of hits from several classic boy bands, which included Jackson 5, The Temptations, The Beatles, Four Tops, The Monkees (“I’m a Believer”), and The Bee Gees’ disco tune “You Should Be Dancing.”

After a slight outfit change, the guys took off their white suits and were left with their gray vests and button-down shirts. It was followed with two New Kids on the Block songs, “Step By Step” and “You Got It (The Right Stuff),” the latter of which was the quintessential sing-along.

Largerthanlife also covered Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison.” “Give yourselves a nice round of applause. Wow,” Edvin said, complimenting the Mulcahy’s audience. “Thank you for coming out tonight and for making it the biggest 90’s night on the planet.”

They continued with “The Call” from the Backstreet Boys and the laid-back “Girlfriend” by N’ Sync, prior to segueing into the lovey-dovey portion of the show with the ballad “All I Have To Give” by the Backstreet Boys.

They paid homage to 98 Degrees by singing “I Do (Cherish You),” which was heartwarming. Nick and Drew Lachey, as well as Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre would smile upon their poignant rendition.

Toly and Chris showed their soft side on the gorgeous ballad “I Drive Myself Crazy” by N’ Sync. “Let’s keep this show going,” Edvin said.

They picked up the pace with Hanson’s midtempo “MMMBop,” while Toly showcased his velvet vocals on “Back Here” by BBMak. They went on to sing “Girl on TV” and “Summer Girls” by LFO.

Edvin went on to perform a neat Michael Jackson skit of “Billie Jean,” while Chris sang “Faith” by George Michael, as he sported sunglasses. Toly showed up his Latin roots with Ricky Martin’s “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” while Devin revitalized “Thong Song” by Sisqo. They were all dressed appropriately for these solo dancing and singing performances.

Equally fun was their live version of “Everybody” by the Backstreet Boys, as fuchsia lights dimmed on the stage, and they immediately broke into N’ Sync’s “Dirty Pop.” They showcased their strong harmonies on “As Long As You Love Me,” and they reminded their fans to “Quit Playing Games With My Heart,” as they dusted off the Backstreet Boys classic.

They closed their lengthy set with such fan-favorite tunes as “It’s Gonna Be Me,” “I Want It That Way” and with the appropriate tune, N’ Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye.”

The Verdict

Overall, Largerthanlife was superb at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh. They were able to bring a feeling of nostalgia to the venue, as they brought their Wantagh audience back to simpler times in the late 90’s, with music from some of the biggest boy bands in music history. All four members displayed a great deal of talent and charisma, and they all divided up the songs well, so they were all afforded the privilege to let their vocals and dancing shine. Their show at Mulcahy’s garnered an A rating.
