article imageReview: Kris Allen delights on new album 'Horizons' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 26, 2014 in Music
American Idol season 8 winner Kris Allen released his latest studio album "Horizons" on August 12, and it is delightful.
Allen released this project independently through his own independent label, DogBear Records. He either wrote or co-wrote all ten tracks. He collaborated with veteran producer Charlie Peacock.
It opens with the acoustic ballad "Young Love (Paul Simon)," where his vocals are refreshing. It is followed by his duet with singer-songwriter Lenachka, "Prove It To You," where their vocals are gentle and hypnotic. This was a solid choice for a debut single.
"Beautiful & Wild" is liberating and it features strong harmonies, and he accompanies himself on acoustic guitar. While "In Time" has a slower tempo, it allows for his crystalline voice to shine, and it has an infectious beat.
"Lost" is piano-driven and it has a sultry vibe to it. "Everybody Just Wants to Dance," which Allen wrote solely, is uplifting and fun. This would make a good choice for a follow-up single.
"Parachute" is a crisp and optimistic tune, and one of the best vocals on the album, that includes "ooh-oh" hooks. "I've tried to fight it, yeah, and it's so hard to fight alone, But you're the net to catch my breath when I can't see the truth," Allen sings.
It closes with the soulful "It's Always You" and "Girl Across the Room," yet another tune that Allen penned by himself.
The Verdict
Kris Allen's new album Horizons garners an A rating. He never seems to disappoint, and not only is Allen a talented singer-songwriter, but his warm personality is displayed throughout this album. For anybody that enjoys mellow and honest acoustic singer-songwriter music, this record is right for you.
