article imageReview: Kenny and Amanda Smith captivate on 'Catch Me If I Try' CD Special

By Markos Papadatos     Oct 18, 2014 in Music
Bluegrass music sensations Kenny and Amanda Smith delight on their "Catch Me If I Try" studio album, which is an absolute gem.
Catch Me If I Try opens with the soothing "Blinded By You," which consists of strong instrumentals and smooth vocals. It is followed by "Comin' Around Again," which features Amanda on lead vocals and Kenny on harmonies. They nail the haunting bluegrass ballad "Huntington River" and the title track is reminiscent of a quintessential Rhonda Vincent tune, which ought to be taken as a major compliment.
"The Birmingham Turnaround" is upbeat yet pleasant and "Don't Blame Me" is a breath of fresh air thanks to Amanda's heavenly voice. "Why Did You Fall" is up-tempo, controlled and melodic.
"Jesus, King of Heaven" is a gorgeous gospel hymn, showing their versatility as a duo. "I'm Yours" is nostalgic yet optimistic. Amanda shows her pure mountain vocals on "Run Away Boys" and "That's When You Know" is a mellow and calming ballad.
The CD closes with "Tuggin' On My Heartstrings" and the melancholic ballad "When Tears Come Falling," the latter of which she sings beautifully to the point where one can be brought to tears. "Who say that life was easy, when you're left alone, No one hears you're crying and your shelter is gone," Amanda sings.
The Verdict
Catch Me If I Try is a warm and fun album from start to finish. All 14 songs on there are superb and there is a lot of variety on this project. It is a substantial indication that Amanda Smith's 2014 win for International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) "Female Vocalist of the Year" was indeed deserving. The same holds true for Kenny's "Guitar Player of the Year" nomination. Their CD earns an A rating.
