Her album opens with the piano-driven ballad “I’m Not the Girl I Used to Know,” which immerses the listener in to this CD from the first note. She changes the pace with the more upbeat “Tears Taste the Same,” where she discusses several melancholic experiences.
Street will have the listener clapping along with her on “Situation.” She showcases her laid-back and mellow side on the calming “My Side of Paradise,” which is an autobiographical tune for Street. Her EP closes with the empowering “Bring It On,” where she is able to show her listening audience what she is made of, as she fights for love. Her vocals on this project are reminiscent of such acclaimed songstresses as Lucinda Williams meets Bonnie Raitt.
Throughout her career in the music industry, Street has recorded music for such record labels as Warner Bros., Capitol Records and Clive Davis’ Arista Records.
The Verdict
Overall, Janey Street’s latest EP I’m Not the Girl I Used to Know is a major success, especially since it has an 80s retro vibe to it. While it only consists of five songs, all of the tracks on here are diverse and distinct. Her album is refreshing and authentic. It is a substantial indication that Blue Elan Records knows real talent. It earns 4.5 out of 5 stars.
