article imageReview: Jake Owen captivates on new single 'What We Ain't Got' Special

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 14, 2014 in Music
Country singer Jake Owen released his new single, the power-ballad "What We Ain't Got," which is emotional and it showcases his serious side.
Owen is one of those singers that can get the party started in any country bar, but at the same time, he has songs that can hit his listeners like a shot through the heart, and "What We Ain't Got" is one of those tunes.
He sings it backed solely on keyboards, and it really deals with the unhappiness in the world, and how jaded people may be at times. Similar to the song's title, it's about the hunger for wanting something that is out of reach, and he tackles the subject matter of loss effectively.
"We ain't happy where we are, There's greener grass in the neighbors yard, A bigger house and a faster car, We ain't happy where we are," Owen sings.
This single is the follow-up to his laid-back summer hit "Beachin'," which topped the country charts.
It is a lyrical masterpiece, co-penned by Travis Jerome Goff and Travis Meadows, and it displays Owen's rich yet haunting baritone vocals. The male narrator is mourning the loss of his female lover in the following lyrics: "All I want is what I had, See I'd trade it all just to get her back, She's moving on, But I guess I'm not."
I have been following Owen's career for the very start, and this new song is one of his most touching tunes of his career since his anti-bullying anthem, "Nothing Grows In Shadows," an album cut from his sophomore CD.
The Verdict
Jake Owen's new single shows his diversity as a country artist, and he connects with his fans on an emotional level. "What We Ain't Got" is one of my two favorite songs on his latest studio album Days of Gold, along with "Life of the Party," which are two songs that couldn't be more different from each other. It garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
