New York - On December 27, Digital Journal had the pleasure to see Tony-winning actress Idina Menzel perform on "If/Then" on Broadway.
It took place at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on 46th Street in New York. Idina Menzel stars as Elizabeth, a divorced woman who moves to New York City for a new beginning, and the musical lures the audience member in her personal journey.
If/Then is well-written with interesting story-lines throughout. Some of the highlight musical numbers in the first set include "What If," as well as "Here I Go," where Menzel sings with James Snyder (who plays army reservist Josh), "A Map of New York" and "No More Wasted Time."
The second act features some of the strongest vocals in the musical such as "I Love You I Hate You," a moving duet between Menzel and Snyder, as well as "You Learn to Live Without," which displays Menzel's soothing yet impressive vocals. The powerhouse performance was her stellar rendition of the charismatic "Always Starting Over," which is worthy of one's ticket price alone. The musical closes with a reprise of "What If" as its grande finale, where the audience member is left wanting more.
The Verdict
Overall, Idina Menzel gave a mesmerizing theatrical performance in If/Then, and the best part was that it was not only a one-woman show. The entire cast was extremely talented and passionate; moreover, its original score by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey was quite remarkable. James Snyder was fantastic as Josh. If/Then earns 5 out of 5 stars, and it was deserving of the standing ovation that it received at the end.
