Review: Heart amazing at Jones Beach, NY for ‘Rock Hall Three for All’ (Includes first-hand account)

They shared the stage with Cheap Trick, who opened the show, as well as Joan Jett & The Blackhearts, who followed Heart’s performance.

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson began their set with “Magic Man,” where they were instantly able to lure their fans into their rock show, and they immediately broke into the fan-favorite tune “What About Love,” where Ann showcased her powerhouse vocals. “Good evening. Welcome to the Heart world,” Ann said. “Thanks for sitting in the traffic and showing up,” she added, and went on to introduce her younger sister and band-mate Nancy.

“This is a love song from the 80’s. We survived the 80’s and a few cool songs. This is one of them,” Nancy said, and serenaded the audience to “These Dreams,” as she accompanied herself on mandolin, and as the stage displayed a neat green background on its televised screen. It is safe to say that Nancy still possesses the voice of an angel.

Nancy continued by singing lead on the new song “Two,” which was penned by Ne-Yo. Her performance was expressive and Nancy proved to be a true song stylist, where she was able to give the lyrics her own unique interpretation. Ann joined her on its haunting harmonies.

Ann noted that they haven’t got all night, so while the fans were sitting down and relaxing, she encouraged them to get up by signing a verse of James Brown’s “Get Up Offa That Thing,” and that was the point, where she introduced her remaining band members. It was followed by the mid-tempo yet rocking “Straight On,” as well as the up-tempo and spitfire “Kick It Up,” where Ann belted out the high notes.

The Wilson sisters shared that they have a new record out called Beautiful Broken, and they described the title track as a “sweet and tender story” about a person who can do it all, coupled with some craziness. They went on to sing “Beautiful Broken” as yellow lights dimmed on the stag, with Nancy on backing vocals, and Ann closed it with an a cappella ending, that was well-received by all.

Just when you thought that Heart could not get better, they were able to prove everybody wrong, as they nailed their chart-topping power-ballad “Alone.” Their fans were able to light up the venue with their iPhones on this emotional vocal. The control that Ann maintained over her voice throughout this song was absolutely incredible, and it earned them a lengthy standing ovation.

Equally impressive was “Crazy on You,” where Nancy displayed her unparalleled prowess on acoustic guitar, where everybody was left in awe, including her older sister, Ann, who was sitting on stage beaming with pride as she watched Nancy play the guitar solo. This song featured a neat psychedelic background on the televised screen, and they closed with “Barracuda,” where Ann showed a little angst. For their encore, they returned with “Love Hurts,” which they sang as a duet with Cheap Trick.

The Verdict

Overall, Ann and Nancy from Heart were superb at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on Long Island. They prove every year that they only get better with age and experience, and they are able to rock at every venue they perform. Vocally, Ann is a true force of nature, and Nancy is the epitome of grace, style and beauty. Their live Jones Beach show garnered 5 out of 5 stars.
