article imageReview: Gregg Allman delivers at his Laid Back Festival at Jones Beach Special

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 30, 2015 in Music
Wantagh - On August 29, veteran rock star Gregg Allman headlined his Laid Back Festival at the Nikon at Jones Beach Theater on Long Island.
Allman opened his set with the bluesy "Statesboro Blues," accompanying himself on the Hammond organ, where Scott Sharrard nailed the electric guitar, and it featured soaring saxophone instrumentation. It was met with a roaring applause.
He continued with the southern rock classic "I'm No Angel" and the smooth "Come and Go Blues." The highlight vocal of the evening was his compelling version of The Allman Brothers Band signature tune "Midnight River."
After the saxophone-driven "Don't Want You No More," he showcased his raspy vocals on "Not My Cross to Bear." He performed the love ballad "Melissa" on acoustic guitar, and it was met with a warm reception. "Stormy Monday" was a neat jam featuring Allman's mellow voice, and he closed with "Southbound."
For the encore, The Doobie Brothers returned to the stage and joined Allman for the grand finale "One Way Out."
The Verdict
Overall, Gregg Allman's Laid Back Festival at Jones Beach, New York, was a major success. He was able to put on an entertaining concert, and the Long Island audience treated him like rock music royalty. His opening acts, Lara Johnston, The Doobie Brothers and other special guests were able to deliver as well. There was a great sense of nostalgia in the venue, especially when Allman performed his iconic Allman Brothers Band hits. His show earned 4.5 out of 5 stars.
