David Frizzell has released his critically-acclaimed "Frizzell & Friends present Buddy Holly Country Tribute: Remember Me" album.
It opens with the legendary Merle Haggard singing "Remember Me," as well as David Frizzell and Sonny Curtis' uptempo, fiddle-driven "Rock Around With Ollie Vee."
Frizzell shows his country-rock side on the upbeat tracks "Brown-eyed Handsome Man" and "Peggy Sue." Jimmy Fortune lends his velvet vocals on "Oh Boy" and Merle Haggard is featured yet again on "That'll Be The Day."
Fortune and Frizzell collaborate with country songstress Helen Cornelius on "Everyday" and it is a fine collaboration thanks to her soothing vocals. Frizzell and T Graham Brown delight on the piano-driven "Mailman Bring Me No More Blues." T Graham Brown changes the pace with the upbeat "Maybe Baby," which is the quintessential sing-along.
"Rave On" is another soaring duet for Frizzell and T Graham Brown. "Think It Over" displays Fortune's rich, baritone voice, and Fortune yet again delights on "Early In The Morning" with David Frizzell.
Cornelius channels her inner rock star with "It's So Easy," which was made famous by Linda Ronstadt. "Wishing" is another fun duet vocal, and "Learning The Game" is a refreshing solo performance by Frizzell.
"Drown in My Own Tears" is a bluesy ballad and T Graham Brown nails it perfectly. "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" is traditional country with fiddle, coupled by Fortune's vocals.
"True Love Ways" is a delicate duet vocal between Fortune and Cornelius. "Maria Elena" is another poignant ballad and "Walk Right Back" is equally noteworthy. It closes with "Remember Me," which leaves the listener wanting more top-notch country music.
The Verdict
Overall, David Frizzell and his special musical guests prove that they are like fine wine. They get better with age. They have given the late Buddy Holly a beautiful homage with these superb vocals. This collection garners an A rating.
