Review: Folk duo March to May sparks ‘Embers’ with their new single (Includes first-hand account)

“Embers” is a track on their forthcoming studio album, The Water’s Edge, which will be out on April 25. All of the songs on that project were co-written by Darren Guyaz (who plays guitar and keyboard) and Beth Wesche.

The duo was influenced by an array of esteemed musicians that includes Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova from the Oscar-winning film Once, as well as Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan and Lindsey Stirling, and elements from all of these singer-songwriters is evident in their “Embers” single.

“The sounds of summer steal away, And the fire’s burning low, I trace the embers of your face, And watch the amber glow,” they sing.

The Verdict

Overall, “Embers” is a haunting yet elegant vocal performance by both Darren and Beth from the folk band. Their harmonies are superb and controlled, where the listener can easily recall The Civil Wars and Evanescence, which should be taken as major compliments. Their voices blend well together, and they produce memorable melodies. “Embers” garners 4.5 out of 5 stars. The only disadvantage is that is spans over four minutes, thus making it lengthy for radio stations to play their tune, but otherwise it is a crisp and crystalline vocal.
