Review: Ella Henderson mesmerizes on breakthrough ‘Ghost’ single (Includes first-hand account)

It is a track from her debut studio album, Chapter One. She co-wrote the single with her two producers Ryan Tedder, the lead singer of the pop-rock group OneRepublic, and Noel Zancanella. It encompasses elements of pop, R&B and soul.

“I keep going to the river to pray, cause I need something that can wash all the pain, And at most I’m sleeping all these demons away, But your ghost, the ghost of you, It keeps me awake,” Henderson sings.

The control she showcases over her voice is exceptional, especially her whistle register. The listener can easily recall fellow British singer Leona Lewis (“Bleeding Love”), and that ought to be taken as a major compliment. She looks elegant in the music video that she filmed for the song; moreover, it has a clever story-line and it is visually striking.

Particularly impressive about Henderson is that she is only 19 years old. The talent she has is extraordinary; she is poised for super-stardom. A little over two years ago, she finished in sixth place on the ninth season of The X Factor in Great Britain. That show introduced her to England, and hopefully this new single, will introduce her music to the world.

The Verdict

“Ghost” is perhaps the best song that I have heard by a female artist on the radio airwaves in quite a while. Her vocals are sultry, refreshing, soothing and crisp. It garners 5 out of 5 stars. Congratulations to Ella Henderson for a job well done. She deserves to earn a “Best New Artist” nomination at next year’s Grammy awards.
