Caillat began her set with “Live It Up,” as an orange backdrop graced the giant televised screen, coupled with her soothing vocals. “Thank you New York City,” Caillat said, following the warm reception of her opening tune.
She continued with her popular radio hit “Fallin’ for You” and “If You Love Me Let Me Go.” With the help of modern technology, Caillat duets with fellow singer-songwriter Jason Mraz, and she pays homage to him, covering his laid-back song “Lucky.” “Give it up for Jason Mraz everyone,” she said, and the ironic part was that Mraz’s pre-recorded voice answered through the televised screen, saying “thank you” in return.
Caillat changed the pace of her set with the upbeat and fun “Shadow” and the songstress was dancing along to “Like Tomorrow Never Comes.”
Her piano-driven “In Love Again” featured a neat rain background, and a lilting voice that captured the mood of the lyrics. It was such a delicate and emotional performance that displayed her wide range as a vocalist.
“Blaze” was modern-sounding than the rest of her set, while “Hold On” was hypnotic, and its backing vocals elevated it to a higher level. The highlight vocal performance was her acoustic-driven smash single “Realize,” featuring her honey-rich voice and a killer electric guitar solo, which was the perfect lullaby.
She accompanied herself on acoustic guitar on her signature song “Bubbly” and “I Never Told You” was yet another empowering and controlled performance, where she stood at the microphone and belted out the tune
Caillat showcased her vulnerability on the optimistic ballad “Try,” as she played the piano, and moved her audience members to tears thanks to the poignant images of people featured in the televised screen. She closed with “Never Gonna Let You Down” and lifted her fans back up with the cheery sing-along “Brighter Than the Sun.”
The Verdict
Overall, Colbie Caillat did a fine job at her show at Pier 97 in New York. Her songs were warm and diverse. Christina Perri and Rachel Platten were also remarkable in their sets, proving that their “Girls Night Out, Boys Can Come Too” tour is worth seeing whenever they are in town. Her concert garnered 4.5 out of 5 stars.
