Review: Chris Young headlines the Pennysaver Amphitheater in New York (Includes first-hand account)

Country group LANco, as well as country singers Chris Lane, Michael Ray and Canaan Smith served as his opening acts.

“What’s up you guys? How are ya’ll doing out there tonight?” Young asked, and opened his set with the mid-tempo “Underdogs,” as images of football players displayed on the giant televised screen to depict the true “underdogs.”

He showcased his vulnerability on the piano-driven ballad “Sober Saturday Night.” Thank ya’ll for letting us do that one right there,” he said, graciously.

The fan-favorite song of the evening was “Voices,” and equally memorable were his other chart-topping singles “You,” “Tomorrow,” “The Man I Want to Be,” as well as the sultry “Gettin’ You Home (The Black Dress Song).”

Another heartfelt ballad was “I’m Comin’ Over,” where he belted out the tune, as purple and yellow lights dimmed on the stage, to help capture its tender mood.

It is a true pity that “Aw Naw,” “Who I Am With You” and the flirty “Lonely Eyes” didn’t make it to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Airplay charts, since tonight Young proved that they were worthy of that chart-topping milestone thanks to his rich, baritone vocals. In “Think of You,” the Long Island audience served as his background singers, in lieu of his duet partner, country songstress Cassadee Pope.

The Verdict

Overall, Chris Young was able to deliver at the Pennysaver Amphitheater on Long Island. He was able to satisfy both listeners of traditional and modern country music with his versatile voice. His live show earned 4.5 out of 5 stars.
