Review: Chris Tomlin captivates NYC in ‘Worship Night in America’ show (Includes first-hand account)

Tomlin shared the stage with such special musical guests as Louie Giglio, Max Lucado, Matt Redman, Kari Jobe, Matt Maher and Rend Collective. Most impressive about this concert is that the lyrics for the worship songs were displayed on the giant televised screen, which made it easier for the crowd to sing along.

He opened his set with “Our God” as the stage was graced in blue lights, and as he accompanied himself on acoustic guitar. Matt Redman sang lead on “Blessed Be Your Name,” as Tomlin accompanied him on guitar and harmony.

“Hello, New York City,” Tomlin said. “How are you doing? Welcome to our first ‘Worship Night in America,” he added, prior to noting that God put this dream in his heart two years ago. He was singing these worships songs with his musical guests, who had helped him write the tunes.

Reuben Morgan from Hillsong sang lead on “Cornerstone.” “I feel it’s a holy moment as a church,” Tomlin said. “Tonight is one allegiance to one great man.”

They continued with the piano-driven “Because He Lives” and they incorporated it as a medley with Matt Maher’s “Because He Lives (Amen).” Tomlin went on to deliver an empowering rendition of “How Great Is Our God” coupled with “How Great Thou Art” towards the end, where the Madison Square Garden audience served as his backing choir.

Kari Jobe was sensational on her version of “Revelation.” “Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, Holy, Holy is He,” Jobe sang with her angelic vocals. Tomlin was delightful on “We Cry Holy,” and its moving lyrics brought many audience members to tears.

They went on perform on a remarkable acoustic set on a different stage in the back of the venue, which included English Christian musician Matt Redman’s “The Heart of Worship” and the haunting yet stunning “Unbroken Praise.”

A beautiful moment was when the crowd started singing Matt Maher’s “Lord, I Need You” before the singers did, which left the musicians and the band in total awe. Equally soothing was Hillsong’s “Mighty To Save.”

“Are you ready, New York?” he yelled, prior to singing the upbeat and infectious “God’s Great Dance Floor,” as giant balls were bouncing around the venue.

The Verdict

Overall, Chris Tomlin and his musical friends were able to deliver at their first “Worship Night in America” live performance in the heart of New York City. The sold-out audience was fully immersed in the songs, and it was able to touch the fans on a spiritual level. Tomlin’s live show garnered 4.5 out of 5 stars.
