article imageReview: Boris Rogowski debuts solo project 'The Society Islands'

By Andrew Ellis     Oct 14, 2014 in Music
The Society Islands is a solo project from Germany-based singer-songwriter Boris Rogowski that includes style shifts that can occur mid-song.
The album, The Big Sleep, is full of songs that have their own distinct sound, and while there are more than a few standouts, there are a handful of songs that risk losing the listener's attention.
On "From My Mouth Into Yours," Boris is joined by an unnamed female singer. The vocals do a great job of complimenting each other when it comes to the harmonies, which is one of the highlights of a very linear song. The production may be minimal, but it does manage to fit in well the harmonies.
One song that wastes no time in hooking you is "Cheap Life." You'll be tapping your feet within seconds of the song starting, and the instruments that are added, and taken away, throughout will keep you engaged until the very end. Rogowski also explores the different ranges of his voice in different sections.
Then there's "Gone," which has a very haunting feel to it. It also features another unnamed female singer, and a guitar that adds a nice dark twang. It's a song that fits perfect with Rogowski's voice.
In a way, "Sunday" is an outlier on the album as it's one of the loudest songs on the album, but that's not saying much. It is, however, another example of when each part of a production fits together just right.
Besides the album opener, ""Stargazer" is the song with most production on the album. It moves along really well, but it could have been cut down by about two minutes.
As a whole the album is pretty calm with a small bit of adrenaline thrown in here and there. Some will enjoy this album all the way through, but others will just go song hunting.
The digital version is available now, and the CD version will be available November 14.
