article imageOp-Ed: Top 5 country songs for Mother's Day celebrations

By Markos Papadatos     May 10, 2014 in Music
Mother's Day is tomorrow and here are five picks of my favorite country songs that are appropriate for this festive occasion. These are in no particular order.
Singer-songwriter Jessie James Decker released a new EP Comin' Home, which features the soothing ballad "Mama Wrote You a Lullaby," that she wrote for her new baby Vivianne Rose.
Country trio The Band Perry's "Mother Like Mine" was inspired by their mother. It talks about how the world would look like if it was raised by their mom. It is the ultimate homage for any mother. "Oh the wars would all be over, cause she'd raise us all as friends," they sing.
Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" has become a country classic. It deals with a mother singing her well wishes for her children, and Womack's mellifluous vocals have made it an inspirational anthem. Decades from now, this song will certainly be timeless due to its poignant and heartfelt lyrics. "I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean," Womack sings. "Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens."
Martina McBride's angelic "Born to Give My Love To You" was never a radio single, but it's lyrics are so touching and very fitting for "Mother's Day." While it can have many meanings, it can be about a mother singing about her love for her baby. "As sure as newborn babies cry, I was born to give my love to you," McBride sings in a lullaby-esque voice.
Another Martina McBride song that is suitable for the Mother's Day occasion is her multi-week chart-topping single, the mid-tempo "Blessed," where sings about all the blessings she has had in her life. "I can hear my children laughing, down the hall through the bedroom door," McBride sings. "When I'm singing my kids to sleep, when I feel you holding me, I know, I am so blessed."
