article imageOp-Ed: Top 10 pop music acts to watch in 2014

By Markos Papadatos     Aug 16, 2014 in Music
2014 was a big year for pop music, and here are 10 musical acts, in no particular order, that have promising futures in the genre.
Austin Mahone: Austin Mahone's career has been skyrocketing exponentially since last year. He released his latest The Secret EP, and he is winning every music award imaginable (Radio Disney Music Award, MTV Europe Award, MTV VMA award, Young Hollywood Award, Teen Choice Award) thanks to the support of his dedicated fans and followers, his "Mahomies." He knows how to engage a live crowd, which was evident in his recent live performance at iHeartRadio in New York City at the iHeartRadio Theater, presented by P.C. Richard and Son.

Becky G: While I was first introduced with Becky G thanks to her collaboration with Cody Simpson on "Wish U Were Here," she proves that she can do it all on her own with her latest radio single "Shower," which is extremely radio-friendly and infectious, reminiscent of the style of Rihanna.

Cody Simpson: Over the entire year, Cody Simpson has always given his fans what they want; he released his Acoustic Sessions EP, as well as "La Da Dee," the theme song for Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, as well as "Love," his collaboration with Ziggy Marley and his latest single "Surfboard." The Aussie native also competed on the reality show, Dancing with the Stars, and he is constantly touring and filming new videos for his dedicated fans.

Fifth Harmony: All-girl group Fifth Harmony took the pop industry by storm thanks to the success of "Miss Movin' On." They finished in third place on the second season of The X Factor, and subsequently won two Radio Disney Music awards this year, were nominated for six Teen Choice Awards and they are in the running for the MTV VMA award for "Artist to Watch." They have opened for such artists as Demi Lovato, Cher Lloyd and Austin Mahone.

Jake Miller: A 21-year-old Florida native, Jake Miller can do it all: sing, write songs and his own rapping. He is signed to the major record label, Warner Brothers Records, and he is touring throughout the country in such venues as The Paramount in Huntington, New York, as well as Six Flags Great Adventure amusement park in New Jersey, among many others. He already has a first single out "First Flight Home," which is honest and autobiographical.

James Maslow: James Maslow is best known for being a part of the hit television show Big Time Rush and the band of the same name, but this year, he also showed his dancing chops on Dancing with the Stars, where he was partnered with professional dancer Peta Murgatroyd. He is making his debut on the original television series Sequestered. Also, he is working on new solo music that will be released towards the end of the year, which ought to be promising, knowing his dedicated fan-base.

Kendall Schmidt from Heffron Drive: Aside from being a member of the band Big Time Rush, Kendall is known for his side project, Heffron Drive, an electro-pop duo with Dustin Belt. They soared on their single "Parallel" and they are on their "Happy Mistakes" tour, in support of their debut studio album of the same name. They will be playing New York's Irving Plaza on September 3, and given Kendall's popularity from Big Time Rush, he and Belt should fare well with Heffron Drive.

Meghan Trainor: Epic recording artist Meghan Trainor is proving that she is "All About That Bass," which has become an anthem of female empowerment. Her song is catapulting up the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It has a message for people to accept their own bodies and feel comfortable with themselves.

Pentatonix: A capella vocal group Pentatonix can take virtually any pop song and twist them into their own, and they can do that with only their voices, which is quite astonishing. Their forthcoming CD PTX Vol. 3 should be really promising and their lead single "Problem" is already out.

Sam Smith: British pop sensation Sam Smith has taken the pop industry by storm this year, thanks to his moving and soulful breakthrough single "Stay With Me," as well as his tender piano-driven cover of Whitney Houston's "How Will I Know." Simply put, he is the male equivalent of Adele. I would not be surprised if he lands many Grammy nominations at next year's ceremony in such categories as "Best New Artist," "Song of the Year," "Best Pop Solo Performance" and "Record of The Year" to name a few.
