article imageOp-Ed: Martina McBride should win CMA 'Female Vocalist of the Year'

By Markos Papadatos     Sep 15, 2014 in Music
The Country Music Association (CMA) awards will take place on November 5 in Nashville and five amazing ladies are up for "Female Vocalist of the Year."
The nominees include reigning "Female Vocalist of the Year" winner Miranda Lambert, as well as Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves and Martina McBride.
While Miranda may be the popular choice, since she was ubiquitous this year, I would love for the award to be bestowed upon Martina for the following reasons. She has been nominated for the "Female Vocalist of the Year" award consistently since 1996, with the exception of 1997 and 2013. She has won the award four times throughout her career, a record she holds with Reba McEntire and Miranda. This year, if either Miranda or Martina win, the tie will be over.
A three-time winner, Underwood could emerge as the dark horse, and if she were to win, she would be tied with Reba, Martina and Miranda for the most CMA "Female Vocalist" wins.
Martina tried something new this year. She released an exceptional album of soul and R&B covers entitled Everlasting, and it went all the way to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Album charts, as an independent release, which was quite an accomplishment, especially since she is not signed to a major label anymore. It proves her relevance and her ability to resonate well with the hearts of her listeners and fans. Also, if anybody has ever had the pleasure to see Martina perform live, their jaw would be on the floor throughout the duration of the show, with the high notes that she hits. One may easily wonder as to why she is not nominated for "Entertainer of the Year," since her powerhouse voice is a true force to be reckoned with. She has also been a perennial nominee for several different decades, which is an achievement in itself.
For all of these reasons and more, Martina McBride's name on the CMA "Female Vocalist of the Year" ballot should be given more than just a passing glance. She is one of the best working entertainers in country music.
