article imageOp-Ed: 5 Best Male Vocalists in 'American Idol' history

By Markos Papadatos     Jul 28, 2014 in Music
The "American Idol" singing competition has been home to some extremely talented male vocalists, but here are the five that Digital Journal feels are the most talented.
These are arranged in no particular order, since they are gifted and unique artists in their own ways.
David Cook: David Cook was the season seven winner of American Idol, and impressed many with his ability to take any other singer's song, twist it and make it his own. He scores hit singles with such songs as "The Time of My Life," "Come Back To Me," "Light On" and "Permanent." I applaud Cook even more for his big heart and charity work, for being active with "Race for Hope," which works to raise funds for brain cancer research, in an effort to find a cure. He is definitely a musician that connects with his fans and listeners at the emotional level. Rock on David Cook.

Adam Lambert: While Adam Lambert did not win American Idol during its eighth season, he came in second to Kris Allen, it is safe to say that he has been far more successful from a commercial standpoint. His sophomore album Trespassing reached the top on the Billboard 200 all-genre charts, and aside from his Grammy nomination for "Best Male Pop Vocal Performance" for "Whataya Want From Me," he is touring the country with iconic rock band Queen, selling out large arenas. As Digital Journal reported, Lambert and Queen put on an amazing concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Chris Daughtry: Chris Daughtry came in fourth during the fifth season of American Idol, but he has done exceptionally well. He is the lead singer and rhythm guitar player of his own band, Daughtry, and has secured two No. 1 albums and his songs "Home," "It's Not Over" and his newest hit "Waiting For Superman," "September," "Life After You," "Feels like Tonight" and "No Surprise" are still all played constantly on pop, rock and adult contemporary radio stations. As Digital Journal reported, they put on a high-energy rock show at Jones Beach Theater in New York.

James Durbin: While James Durbin only came in fourth place in the tenth season of the reality singing competition, he has been able to break a lot of boundaries in the hard rock and heavy metal music scene. He was the first contestant in Idol to ever sing a Judas Priest song live on stage, and he displayed his tremendous vocal range throughout the show. His debut album reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Rock charts, and it featured his singles "Love Me Bad" and "Stand Up," as well as my favorite song of his "Outcast," which was a collaboration with Mick Mars, the lead guitarist from the iconic heavy metal group Motley Crue. He is back with his new album Celebrate, which came out in April, which features his single "Parachute."

Phillip Phillips: Phillip Phillips won the eleventh season of American Idol, and rightfully so. His coronation song "Home" became an anthem during the 2012 summer Olympic Games and he has made his mark in the pop, rock, folk and adult contemporary scene thanks to the success of "Home" and his follow-up hit singles "Gone, Gone, Gone" and "Raging Fire." Last year, I had the pleasure of seeing Phillips play live at Jones Beach Theater opening for John Mayer and he put on a fantastic concert. Simply put, he is the "Dave Matthews" of my generation.
